Four new 90-minute episodes of Gilmore Girls are coming to Netflix on November 25th, 2016! I became a Gilmore fan in 2000 when GG’s creator, Amy Sherman-Palladino, asked me to do music for the show.
At the beginning, figuring out a unique score for Amy’s one-of-a-kind show took some experimenting. I knew she wanted me to sing, so I tried writing some lyrics (nope! too distracting with all the fast talking). I ended up singing La La’s and other background vocals. I tried different instrumentation…my favorite old acoustic guitar? Yes! Mandolin? NO! (too country - what was I thinking?) A lot of strings? No. (too over the top dramatic)…piano (yes)…understated drums and bass (yes.) Most importantly, I wanted to use real instruments and musicians instead of programming digital samples.
After the show went off the air in 2007, there were rumors of a Gilmore movie. Though that would’ve been great, I love the way A YEAR IN THE LIFE is coming to the small screens in four movie-length episodes (Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall). From the very first table read I went to (where the actors gathered around a conference table and read the script out loud), I was struck by how great the cast and the writing is (and was). Those of you who loved the show will not be disappointed. Binge them or watch them every Tuesday night at 8pm like the old days—just don’t forget the snacks!!
