One of the best gifts I've ever received was a visit to the UCLA archives to view the personal papers of Henry Miller. It was amazing to hold and read not only typewritten pages, but handwritten ones as well. The library even allowed me to xerox a page of his handwriting, which has become one of my treasures.
Other treasures in my collection are handwritten notes, letters and cards from dear friends and family. These papers are more and more precious to me as our digital communication becomes less private and more abbreviated.
Though many songwriters have published books of their lyrics, (and I may do that at some point), my dream would be to hand write a book of lyrics on beautiful paper. Even though my handwriting is Wabi-Sabi wobbly, it is pen to paper, one of a kind, and in my mind, lands somewhere between music and visual art.
From today through December 4th I will be making handwritten lyric sheets per your song request. You can order them on my
website or my
Bandcamp.
As we approach the end of the year and think about giving gifts, maybe a handwritten letter, card or note on lovely paper from you to someone special (beyond the obligatory holiday card or e-mail) would find its way into their treasure box.
Whatever you give and however you celebrate, I hope your holidays are an absolute blast!
All the best from Sam
